Coaching Requirements
All coaches for St. Jude’s Athletics are expected and required to abide by the Charter and Bylaws of the Diocese of Cleveland Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). Please ensure you familiarize yourself with the rules and expectations of CYO Athletics.
All coaches are required to turn in an application and signed Code of Ethics and Conduct to be considered to be a head or assistant coach. All coaches are required to submit an application for each season and for each sport. Neglecting to do so will remove you from consideration for coaching duties. Turning in an application does not ensure you will be selected. All coaches are required to complete the CYO requirements prior to submitting your application for consideration. Please turn your completed application to Compliance Director.
To begin, you will need to create an account through Sports Pilot.
All coaches are required to complete concussion training to adhere to Ohio’s Return to Play Law, view the video concerning Sudden Cardiac Arrest and sign the form, attend VIRTUS training and attend the CYO Coaches Development Program class for certification. Each of these is MANDATORY. More details are listed below.
Ohio’s return to play law went into effect on April 26th, 2013. All coaches in the state of Ohio are required to complete this training. Failure to do so will result in your removal from consideration to coach any athletic activity at St. Jude. Click on this link for NFHS Concussion training. This course is free of charge.
New in 2017 – All Coaches and Student athletes are required to review a Sudden Cardiac Arrest video. Athletes and parents are required to sign a form stating they’ve reviewed it.
View the video here: Sudden Cardiac Arrest and follow the link to the form to sign and return with all other coaching forms.
All adult CYO volunteers are required to be background checked, fingerprinted and VIRTUS trained prior to starting any volunteer position with CYO. Please visit https://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/Here for further information.
Once a coach accepts the responsibility to coach in CYO Athletics, they accept the responsibility to maintain a standard for excellence. Every coach, head and assistant, must attend the Coaches Development Program (CDP) before they begin coaching.
Rooted in our mission and values, it is our intention to offer an informational and educational leadership-training program for youth coaches. The program outline session includes Youth Ministry Through Athletics, CYO Governance, Risk Management, Helping Young Athletes Safely Excel in Sports and Coaching Pedagogy.
Registration
The program is offered throughout the year in both the Cleveland and Akron areas.
Once a coach completes the program, they will be issued a coaching card and lanyard. Every coach on the coaching staff must wear their credentials to every contest.
